David C. Burtker
Mr. Burtker received his legal education at Northern Illinois University College of Law, graduating in 1978. He began his legal career at Crooks & Gilligan, Ltd. in 1978, representing health professionals in medical-legal litigation matters. In 1988 that firm merged with French, Kezelis & Kominiarek, P.C., one of the preeminent professional liability defense firms in the State of Illinois. Mr. Burtker practiced civil trial litigation through December, 2001 and served on the firm’s Executive Committee as Director of the professional corporation. He joined Cunningham, Meyer & Vedrine, P.C. in January, 2002 with the responsibility of opening the firm’s Chicago office. He is admitted to practice in the State of Illinois and is a member of the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of Illinois, Trial Bar and U.S. District Court for the Central District of Illinois, Trial Bar. In June, 2003, Mr. Burtker was admitted as an attorney and counselor of the Supreme Court of the United States.
In his thirty years of practice, Mr. Burtker has handled all forms of civil litigation, with special emphasis on the trial practice of medical and health professional negligence, pharmaceutical manufacturer liability and medical products liability matters. In the medical, health and pharmaceutical areas he has represented defense parties in the field of anesthesiology, general surgery, hepatology, nephrology, high risk obstetrics/gynecology, psychiatry/suicide, and urology. Further, Mr. Burtker has handled high profile trials involving complex issues relative to Benzodiazepines, AquaMephyton, alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency and intrapartum asphyxia/neonatal encephalopathy on behalf of medical professionals and hospital institutions.
Mr. Burtker’s professional practice and numerous trials have been subject of publications, including Chicago Law Bulletin, Chicago Magazine, Illinois Legal Times, Mealey’s Litigation Report, Anesthesia Malpractice Prevention, and the National Law Journal. Mr. Burtker is a frequent speaker on the topics of trial practice and medical risk management, for both private organizations and publically held corporations, such as CNA Insurance and Medical Protective. Further, Mr. Burtker had been the author of several videos on deposition and trial preparation for the health care community.
